Photomontage: Image Hijack (Part 1)

For Photomontage: Image Hijack (Part 1), I chose the following topics that are important to me:

1. Whale hunting;
2. Breastfeeding in public;
3. Immigration crisis, asylum at the US border.

1. For the issue of whale hunting resuming in Japan, I chose this famous wood print: The Great Wave off Kanagawa. This image is known to everyone, and I thought it would be a good choice for a critique poster against the Japanese whaling business.

Sketches left to right:
Chopsticks yanking a whale out of the ocean;
"Research" vessel with a dead whale in the ocean;
Travel poster reads "Experience Japan" bowl with an ocean full of whales and dolphins and chopsticks across it and reads "best food";
A whale is swimming in the ocean, but it is a mouth instead.

2. For Breastfeeding in public, I chose Madonna Litta, attributed to Leonardo Da Vinci:

Sketches left to right:
Madonna breastfeeding and covering herself up, not baby, but her face;
Madonna is breastfeeding, and a person trying to cover her with a rag;
Madonna with pixelated breast area;
Artwork hanging on the gallery wall in a gold gilded frame with "censored content".

3. For the last theme, I chose the Mandalorian TV series, specifically the characters of Mando and Grogu (baby Yoda). I had a wider range of ideas on incorporating them into this theme, so I will provide several images I used for my sketch ideas.

Sketches left to right:
Grogu is given back his Asylum application with DENIED stamped across it;
Mando and Grogu in ICE detention center;
Mando holding Grogu as he surrenders to a U.S. Border Patrol agent after illegally crossing the border.

The Mandalorian is an American space Western television series created by Jon Favreau for the streaming service Disney+.

  1. For your first one, I really like the idea you had of chopsticks picking the whale out of the ocean. I think it's a more simple way to convey the theme of hunting whales for food than the other sketches, and I think having the big hand opposite the big wave makes for some really nice balance. For your second one, I think the "censored content" one best conveys your theme. It shows that an act that is not inherently sexual or inappropriate is seen that way to the extent that famous artwork would be censored for depicting it.
